Our festival center at Kunsthal Charlottenborg opens its doors
One of the most important art institutions in Denmark, Kunsthal Charlottenborg opens its doors to all guests and festival attendees today from 10.00 am. Here you’ll find our festival venues Social Cinema and Mezzaninen where you can attend amazing film screenings, conference panels, happy hours, the big Thao Nguyen Phan-exhibition ’Reincarnations of Shadows’ and CPH:DOX’ immersive exhibition INTER:ACTIVE. With ‘Body politics’ as the conceptual foundation, this year Kunsthal Charlottenborg is transformed into a festival palace with a beautiful and more inclusive interior. With the support of the Bevica Foundation, CPH:DOX’ Social Cinema is a testament to the collaborative spirit of Danish Scaffold Service, Muuto, Magnus Olesen, and OMHU. The spaces in the art hall are open to all festival guests to meet up, watch films, attend industry events or simply relax.
Immerse yourself into CPH:DOX’s INTER:ACTIVE exhibition
As CPH:DOX continues to chart new territories at the intersection of art, technology, and documentary storytelling, we are thrilled to kick off this year’s INTER:ACTIVE Exhibition, ‘Who Do You Think You Are: The Body Reexamined‘. Curated by Mark Atkin, Head of Studies at CPH:DOX, the exhibition unfolds from March 13 – 24, 2024, at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, offering a profound exploration into the evolving relationship between our bodies and immersive technologies. 17 pieces from VR and mixed reality to AI chatbots have been selected and will run for a brand new award for best immersive work. The INTER:ACTIVE exhibition is open to both the public and accredited guests with a valid ticket.
TODAY’S HIGHLIGHTS
INVISIBLE NATION ; Vanessa Hope / United States & Taiwan / 2023 / 85 min ; + Talk: The history behind the Taiwan conflict
With unrestricted access to Taiwan’s current president, we follow the tenure of Tsai Ing-wen, the country’s first female head of state, during a time of great political tension between East and West. As part of the festival’s new ‘Backstory’ section, we will unfold the history behind the Taiwan conflict and the events leading up to ‘Invisible Nation’ after the film in the company of the film’s director, Vanessa Hope, senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Andreas Bøje Forsby, and director of The Danish Foreign Policy Society, Charlotte Flindt Pedersen.
BYE BYE TIBERIAS ; Lina Soualem / France, Palestine, Belgium & Qatar / 2023 / 82 min
Four generations of Palestinian women give vivid and moving accounts of their relationship with their homeland, their hometown of Tiberias, and the resistance that has been passed down from mother to daughter. Through poems, letters, crisp archival footage and contemporary re-enactments of old situations, filmmaker Lina Soualem brings her family’s past to life in a personal narrative about four generations of women, each representing a lived chapter in their country’s history.
MINTED ; Nicholas Bruckman / United States, Canada, Cuba, Netherlands & Nigeria / 2023 / International Premiere / 80 min ; +Q&A: Meet director Nicholas Bruckman
It sent shockwaves through the media when three years ago, the largely unknown artist Beeple sold a digital artwork for $69 million at the Christie’s auction house, placing him among the three most expensive living artists in the world – and in ‘Minted’, we are with him in his living room when it happens. The digital collage work is an NFT, a Non Fungible Token, and if you want to understand how a digital file that anyone can download for free can be worth such a delirious amount of money, you have only turned over the first stone in a deeply fascinating investigation into the relationship between technology, artistic value and bursting bubbles. That’s what we get in ‘Minted’, and it starts and ends with a bang.
DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD ; Radu Jude / Romania, Luxembourg, France & Croatia / 2023 / 163 min
The world needs a film like Radu Jude’s crass, pitch-black and insanely entertaining satire – a radically unpredictable and almost genre-less film that grills all the sacred cows of our time with gasoline. Angela (a terrific Ilinca Manolache) is a young woman with a crappy job as a fixer for a company that makes campaign videos about workplace safety. But she’s also busy making her own provocative videos on Instagram, where she digitally disguises herself as a calloused macho dude who insults feminists, climate activists and everyone else. Over a really long day at work, she drives around Bucharest and meets an incredible cast of characters living in the shadow of the neoliberal world (dis)order. But just when you think you know where it is heading, the Romanian iconoclast grabs us by the nose with a true tour de force of a finale.
