Please dig in!The festival enters its 17th year with a new record; of the 65 films in the five competitions, a total of 43 films will have a world premiere. Additionally, this year’s competition programme includes 16 international premieres and 6 European premieres.

Following up on the festival’s 50/50 by 2020 gender commitment, no less than 52% of the 65 titles in the competition programme are directed by one or more female directors. But the gender equality representation doesn’t stop here – of the 409 experts and panel debate participants, CPH:DOX has invited for it’s no less than 160 debates and film events, 207 are female.

Movements:
A new section dedicated to social and political movements

Micropolitical and activist movements are at the core of CPH:DOX 2020 from Hong Kong to Greenland people are uniting in social movements demanding political actions to declare independence, limit global warming or fight for their data. Many movements are on the rise, and this year we dedicate a whole section to the competition titles that and explore the multiple  ways social or political movements are shaping the world of tomorrow.
The section, called Movements, features titles such as ‘Now’ by Jim Rakete following young climate activists from Greta Thunberg to Extinction Rebellion; ‘Feels Good Man’ by Arthur Jones, featuring a cartoon frog hijacked by the alt-right movements; and Lech Kowalski’s ‘Blow It to Bits’, where French factory workers stand up against globalisation.

Movements are all over the sections. You can’t miss them, but you sure can join them!

An Evening With… Werner Herzog, Edward Snowden, Jonathan Safran Foer and many more!

The ‘Movements’ section isn’t only dedicated to films in the competition programme. This year’s festival will also feature a series of exclusive events with artists and activists whom we have invited to talk about their practice and about major themes featured in the programme.

The An Evening With offers a series of six exclusive talks, which are dedicated to the new, democratic movements, where ordinary citizens rise in demands for a better, more righteous and safer world. It’s about climate changes, digital dilemmas, and the new, Muslim women’s movement. An array of prominent people will take the stage, including Oscar-honored director Werner Herzog for an exclusive talk on the potential of art in making a difference, author Jonathan Safran Foer on fighting climate changes with a knife and fork and whistleblower Edward Snowden (on a live transmission from his exile in Russia) on surveillance.

DOX:AWARD

Strong personal expressions and cinematic quality are celebrated in the main competition, DOX:AWARD, where 13 films are selected from all over the world. Among this year’s selection are films from Oscar nominee Hubert Sauper who will visit the festival with an European premiere of his Sundance Top Prize-winner ‘Epicentro’; award-winning filmmaker and cinematographer Kirsten Johnson’s film ‘Dick Johnson is Dead’ portraying her desperate attempt to keep her aging father alive through the magic of cinema; and Czech documentarist Vít Klusák’s psychological experiment ‘Caught in the Net’ investigating the disturbing world of online predators.

F:ACT AWARD

The festival’s F:ACT AWARD is dedicated to films in the field between documentary filmmaking, investigative journalism and activism. This year the selection includes highlights  such as ‘Jozi Gold’ from award-winning filmmaker Fredrik Gertten (‘Push’, 2019) and Sylvia Vollenhofer; ‘Wood’ from filmmaking-trio Ebba Sinzinger, Monica Lazurean-Gorgan and Michaela Krist, investigating the illegal production of wood and the people who make money off of it; and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and environmentalist Jeff Orlowski’s ‘The Social Dilemma’ on the outspoken activism demanding privacy over personal data’.

NEXT:WAVE

Emerging filmmakers from around the world are competing for the NEXT:WAVE Award 2020. The selection highlights new talents and new approaches to cinema and includes ‘Areum Married’ by South Korean filmmaker Areum Parkkang; French-American filmmaker and artist Lisa Rovner with her newest film ‘Sisters With Transistors’ portraying the remarkable story of female pioneers in electronic music and ‘Mullah’s Daughter’ by filmmakers Hassan Solhjoo and Mahdieh Sadat MirHabibi telling the story of a young woman’s plans to break with her conservative family in Iran.

NEW:VISION

In the NEW:VISION competition, the festival presents 14 experimenting films in the borderland between documentary and artistic reflection. This year’s selection includes films such as a world premiere on ‘Ocean of Love’ from filmmakers Ingo Niermann and Alexa Karolniski – a hybrid documentary that imagines a world where people give and receive love free of any discrimination; Italian artist duo Masbedo will visit the festival with their newest film ‘Welcome Palermo’ investigating the Sicilian society;  and Isrealian artist Yael Bartana features her latest film ‘The Undertaker’ in which she calls attention to the function of weapons in society.

NORDIC:DOX

The 12 films in the NORDIC:DOX competition are a careful selection of documentaries from the North. This year’s selection presents new work by some of the most interesting filmmakers such as ‘Journey to Utopia’ by Norwegian Erlend Eirik Mo, depicting a Danish-Norwegian couple as they move to a self-sufficient, organic village cooperative in Denmark; Danish Mira Jargil will visit the festival with a world premiere of her film ‘Reunited’ following a family divided by the Syrian war; while Norwegian Mariken Halle’s hybrid documentary ‘We Are Here Now’ follows a group of babies and parents during a year in their Scandinavian maternity leave.
