CPH:DOX opens its doors to a brand new Social Cinema, designed based on the principles of Universal Design and equal access for all. A film created by a Palestinian-Israeli collective. Together with International Media Support Regional Director Michael Irving Jensen and Human Rights Program Advisor Anas Kababo, we delve into the historical and current conflict, settler engagement in the West Bank and the intensification after October 7, 2023. Few politicians in the 21st century have been as corrupt and adept at undermining democracy as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n. Orb\u00e1n is a hero to his country\u2019s Christian conservative population, and a role model for the right-wing political movement in Europe and for Donald Trump in the US. Orb\u00e1n takes careful, methodical steps to dismantle Hungarian democratic institutions while maintaining his popularity with a majority of citizens. Oscar-nominated director Connie Field follows three courageous women \u2013 opposition politician Timea, journalist Babett and nurse Nikoletta (Niko) \u2013 who fight tirelessly to expose the lies and corruption embedded in Orb\u00e1n\u2019s government. But they face a well-funded and sophisticated opposition in Orb\u00e1n\u2019s ultra-conservative Fidesz party, which has a strong influence on voters and has already changed key democratic constitutional laws to further cement one-party rule.<\/p>\n

British-born Maggie Barrett is a talented but less recognized artist and writer. There is a knot of unease in their relationship, which is further strained when Maggie falls and breaks her leg and Joel must take on her caregiving. In the shadow of mortality, each with a long and dramatic life behind them, the hard truths of life together provoke in Maggie and Joel an attempt to find a shared inner peace while there is still time. With unique access to the couple\u2019s lives, directors Jacob Perlmutter and Manon Ouimet have created a profoundly moving film about living, creating and loving.<\/p>\n

Berlin is the setting for young actress (and now filmmaker) Henrike Meyer\u2019s attempt to find a way into the film world. But \u2018To Be an Extra\u2019 is not a self-absorbed career project disguised as a documentary. In a distinctly original movie, Meyer instead puts herself at risk and disappears into the nameless supporting roles in adverts and German TV crime dramas she is offered. She is the policewoman in the background when the stars of a TV series solve a murder. And from her new perspective as an out-of-focus extra, she gains a new existential insight into the precarious life on the fringes of both the film industry and society. \u2018To Be an Extra\u2019 is a film that invents its own rules along the way and becomes a piece of performative autofiction that keeps unfolding. Cracks appear in the fabric of reality and something new takes shape in a meta-filmic self-portrait about finding yourself by becoming someone else.<\/p>\n

Can cobra snakes, leopards and scent traps replace pesticides? The Copenhagen Zoo, with the team leader of their international programme, is ready to give it a try at a partially Danish-owned palm oil plantation in Borneo, where brothers Carl and Martin Bek-Nielsen have established a biodiversity department together with the Zoo. The collaboration has resulted in the plantation restoring previously deforested areas and connecting protected rainforest areas through so-called plant corridors, benefiting orangutans and other wildlife in Borneo. But Copenhagen Zoo is also facing resistance from within their own circles in their pragmatic desire to actually make a difference before it\u2019s too late. There is palm oil in an incredible number of products, and the impact of their ecological project is real and far-reaching. Director Dan S\u00e4ll has followed the process for eight years. Initially sceptical, he is now convinced that industrial agriculture can coexist productively and peacefully with nature if the will is there.<\/p>\n

An elderly man struggles to drag a coffin into a small flat in a run-down apartment block. A dark and mysterious scene that from the outset places \u2018The Flats\u2019 in a haunted interior landscape where past and present merge. And they certainly do in New Lodge in the centre of Belfast, a neighbourhood still haunted by the nearly 30-year conflict between Catholics and Protestants which officially ended in 1998. The man with the coffin is called Joe, and behind his unforgettable face, we still recognise the little boy who became involved in the bitter struggle for a united Ireland at far too early an age. Today, he lives in \u2018the flats\u2019, and in his conversations with psychologist Rita, a rift in time and space opens up, revealing old ghosts. Belfast\u2019s painful modern history is tightly interwoven with the lives of Joe and the other New Lodge residents in Alessandra Celesia\u2019s cinematic film, which deliberately unfolds in a timeless vacuum that resembles the 70s, yet is unmistakably contemporary.<\/p>\n

Ten years ago, the renowned and charismatic actor S\u00f8ren Spanning suffered a stroke in the brain. Although he woke up after a month in a coma, it was a new and different S\u00f8ren than the strong and colourful father that his two adult children Rosalinde and Jasper had known, and with whom they had been able to discuss everything from art to love. Now he was paralysed on the left side of his body and confined to a wheelchair. \u2018Our Father\u2019s Sun\u2019 is the adult siblings\u2019 personal, poetic and surprisingly life-affirming film about (and not least a tribute to) the father and the human being S\u00f8ren, who passed away in 2020. Beautifully shot on analogue film by Jasper Spanning, an eminent cinematographer who, together with his sister, enters a much more personal space and emerges with one of the most beautiful films about grief and joy imaginable.<\/p>\n

Ida and Minka share a boundless love for the Finnish forests and a deep respect for nature. But not everyone agrees. The two young environmentalists demonstrate against deforestation and eventually win a seat at the table with the older, bearded men that represent the powerful giants of the timber industry. But one thing is the industry, another thing entirely is to convince your own grandfather, who has spent a lifetime clearing and planting trees, that wild nature means everything to biodiversity and to the future of the planet. The gaps between generations are deep, the climate fight is also a cultural struggle. Fortunately, Finnish filmmaker Virpi Suutari has an eye for more than bitter conflicts and hard fronts, and with commendable humanity (and a dose of understated humour) she has created that great film about nature, the future and the climate that the world has been waiting for \u2013 nothing less.<\/p>\n

A meditative tour of three different, fascinating and distinctive Japanese listening caf\u00e9s that offer an immersive, musical sanctuary amidst the chaotic streets of Tokyo. In three marvellous, well-composed episodes, \u2018A Century of Sound\u2019 focuses on three caf\u00e9s that play jazz, Japanese rock and city-pop, and classical music respectively. The owners, their stories and cats are introduced. What all three caf\u00e9s have in common is that they offer a meditative break from the endless chaos of Tokyo \u2013 and the rest of the world. A stylish time capsule of memories and the past amidst the hustle and bustle. The three episodes are part of a series of six in total, and are presented here as a single film.<\/p>\n
