These themes are naturally reflected in the main programme that features this year four international and eight Slovak productions. Every year, the Festival also offers a lavish accompanying programme for adult and young audiences. This issue of the Newsletter is dedicated to the Festival programme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME: RESPONSE TO THE ECOLOGICAL CRISIS AND WAR IN UKRAINE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The bulk of the international programme presents a selection from the work by the Belgian artistic duo <strong>Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere<\/strong>, who represent the pinnacle of European documentary theatre. They analytically and artistically address a range of insure of the present day that ordinary people either fail to notice or have no idea of their implications. At the same time, Huysmans and Deerere use the latest technologies on stage, working with documentary and authentic recordings which they compose, at times, even poetically. The trilogy is a response to socio\u2013critical, political and ecological issues. Each part carries a critical message.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The highlight of the international programme and of the entire Festival is the inimitable cabaret <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184&amp;id=aa59358cde&amp;e=fc7898801c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184%26id%3Daa59358cde%26e%3Dfc7898801c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694005797994000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0t7ESXrNCaML_-Gzd9NRwD\"><em>Danse Macabre <\/em>(<em>Dance of Death<\/em>)<\/a><\/strong> by the Ukrainian music and performance group <strong>Dakh Daughters. <\/strong>They have come to be one of the main symbols of resistance against the suppression of Ukrainian democracy. A group of six actresses directed by <strong>Vlad Troitskyi<\/strong> on stage connect music of various genres with authentic stories of Ukrainian women and quotations from the Book of Job. The production thus serves as a testimony about war and exile, an indictment, a nostalgic memory of the native land, and a brilliant show all rolled into one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BETWEEN RESPONSE AND RESPONSIBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In the Slovak section, the 2023 Divadeln\u00e1 Nitra brings an exceptionally balanced presentation of works by state-funded and independent theatres.<\/strong> Spectators will also move a few times from theatre halls to non-traditional outdoor settings. Criticality and engagement are the common denominators of those productions. They all represent a distinctly contemporary view of theatre and drama across the entire spectrum of production methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>THE FESTIVAL AS A RESPONSE TO A SOCIETY THAT RESPECTS ITS ELITES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first 2023 Festival performance pays tribute to one of the emblematic representatives of the alternative scene in Slovakia, the stage director <strong>Blaho\u00a0Uhl\u00e1r<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184&amp;id=5236d8cfad&amp;e=fc7898801c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184%26id%3D5236d8cfad%26e%3Dfc7898801c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694005797995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1jZFKeu2hxXGxAokLX3NHb\"><em>Endocannabinoid<\/em><\/a> is a mosaic of presence acting that opens up a number of publicly critical themes, all the while using the sarcastic humour that is characteristic of the <strong>Stoka Theatre<\/strong>. Ever since its inception, Stoka has had to overcome many obstacles. It is thus quite significant that their performance is followed by a public discussion on <strong><em>Independent Culture in jeopardy <\/em><\/strong>to be hosted by <strong>Oliver Reh\u00e1k<\/strong> <strong>from the daily <em>Denn\u00edk N<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Productions directed by <strong>Rastislav Ballek<\/strong>, a stage director with a sharp signature style and the courage to comment on our society through iconic works, are among the most frequently presented within the programme of Divadeln\u00e1 Nitra. The current Festival edition features two pieces directed by Ballek. The production by the <strong>SND Drama Company<\/strong> <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184&amp;id=d7b574c695&amp;e=fc7898801c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184%26id%3Dd7b574c695%26e%3Dfc7898801c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694005797995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw18n-xcjhvt8quS9C3jhJE-\">Gotham City<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>brings a wholly new and unconventional view of our one of Slovak classics, reflecting the story of Slovakia, an acute attempt to form our own identity and, at the same time, to define the shadow that we earnestly and sincerely try to overcome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>THE FESTIVAL AS A RESPONSE TO A SOCIETY THAT RESPECTS THE COUNTRY IT INHABITS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Saturday, the Festival opens with <a href=\"https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184&amp;id=b0322e67e1&amp;e=fc7898801c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184%26id%3Db0322e67e1%26e%3Dfc7898801c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694005797995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3y8n0Nd6r-OtKi83YzH8lv\"><em>We Are a Country<\/em>: <em>A Story of People, Land and Time<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>It outlines a new line of work at the <strong>Jozef Gregor Tajovsk\u00fd Theatre<\/strong> in Zvolen. The production is deemed to be one of the discoveries of the past theatre season. The fate of Slatinka, a water dam that was never built, was brought to the Zvolen stage by the award-winning stage director <strong>Petra Tejnorov\u00e1<\/strong>, one of the foremost representatives of contemporary Czech theatre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The movement site-specific production<strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184&amp;id=4ef7299fb6&amp;e=fc7898801c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nitrafest.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3De754086ff7b2ad6a982e84184%26id%3D4ef7299fb6%26e%3Dfc7898801c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1694005797995000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2GMK1wDqFucQ48ddiu_baI\">Holding River<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>by <strong>Eva Prie\u010dkov\u00e1<\/strong> and <strong>Katar\u00edna Polia\u010dikov\u00e1<\/strong> is a testimony by Slovak artists who have joined their colleagues elsewhere in addressing environmental issues. A poetic statement about the state of the water surface and its interlacing with our bodies takes the audience outdoors, to the banks of the river Nitra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>THE FESTIVAL AS A RESPONSE TO THE PILGRIM SOCIETY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Festival visitors will experience an unconventional pilgrimage with performers <strong>Monika Haasov\u00e1<\/strong> and <strong>Heidi \u0160inkov\u00e1<\/strong>. They will start their pilgrimage from Mlyny, the most popular shopping centre in Nitra. Students of the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts can purchase tickets using a special code and will be reimbursed by their school.
