Life is change, but as the Dalai Lama says, the Lightbulb has to want to change. New dates, new directors, new directions, and what changing temperatures during this 70th edition of one of the most celebrated international film rendezvous in the calendar, created by a former (in dispute), charming (not in dispute as I remember him well on my first-footing, fresh from Oxford University, to what was to become the last summer edition of the Cold War celluloid showcase in the metropolitan oasis of West Berlin, firmly tucked in behind the Iron Curtain).<\/div>\n
\n

With Gina Lollobrigida, one of Woody Allen’s\u00a0 funniest earlier features, and boat trips on the Spree, it was a memorable debut for my reportages on air (on the famed Radio 4\u00a0nightly\u00a0<\/em>arts programme\u00a0Kaleidoscope\u00a0<\/em>and an 850-word article in the historic weeky\u00a0The Spectator)\u00a0<\/em>and I was clearly\u00a0willkommen<\/em>\u00a0to return to subsequent editions, having paid my own way in its last summer, as the first\u00a0Festleiter<\/em>\u00a0enjoyed reading my review and ensured that not only were my hotel costs covered, for 12 days, but even daily\u00a0gutscheine\u00a0<\/em>were provided for sustenance between press screenings, galas, and Forum premieres.<\/p>\n

Colleagues from the East quickly realised these meal vouchers were worth\u00a0 their weight in Deutschmarks, and soon began ordering a mere coffee, and then the waiter would tip them, in any Festival bar, and\u00a0in bar.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>No wonder the Bears really used to dance at night. The Festival has now come full circle, as it provides the press with free cappuccino, provided they bring their own cups.<\/p>\n

Or as Marlene might say,\u00a0waist not, vont not.<\/em><\/p>\n

The best is yet\u00a0 to come…fasten your seat-belts!<\/em><\/p>\n

The documentary film \u00abTHE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA\u00bb, directed by Elena Demidova, tells a story of one of the most famous lamas, Pandido Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov. His body is recognized as one of the sacred Buddhist objects of Russia and is being kept in the Ivolginsky Datsan. The Buddhist monks approach him as a living person.<\/div>\n

Itigelov was born in 1852 and began his religious education at the age of sixteen years. In 1911, he was appointed the twelfth Pandido Khambo Lama as the Head of Russian Buryat Buddhists. Between 1913 and 1917, Itigelov was prominent in the spiritual life of Russian Empire. He took part in the Tercentenary celebrations of the House Romanov and opened first Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg. During First World War Itigelov presided over the society of “Buryat brothers”, an organization helping the Russian army. After October Revolution, Itigelov resigned as head of the Buddhists. In 1927, aged seventy-five years, he asked other lamas to begin meditation ceremonies and funeral rites, since he said he was about to die. Itigelov left a testament asking to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture. On September 11, 2002, Itigelov’s body was eventually exhumed in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan.<\/div>\n
